William Bernard Gifford, Patriot or Spy? A Library Scavenger Hunt

Date(s):
Thu, 17 May 2012, 12:00pm - 1:00pm
Presenter:
John Shaw, Reference Librarian, Genealogy & Local History
Location:
New Jersey State Library, Meeting Room, Level 5

Try this new hands-on approach to learning about the library and its collections.  In this scavenger hunt facts will replace objects. Instead of being given the name or description of objects to be found, you will be given the titles of books to be used to answer a series of questions. All the questions concern the life of one Revolutionary War soldier named William Bernard Gifford. Sometime during the week before the May 17th session spend some time in the library on your own answering the questions on your scavenger hunt work sheet. It should take no more than an hour to answer all the questions.

While on the hunt you will discover facts about Gifford’s marriages, divorce, military service, his capture by the British, and his suspected role as a spy. Bring your answers to the scheduled noon-hour program to discuss what you found, hear the experiences of others who followed the same path, see the sources you may have missed, and ask questions. This is a great way to learn about the library and its collections.

As you search for the books on your scavenger hunt list, you will become comfortable using the library catalog and will have the opportunity to venture into seven of the library's special collections: Genealogy, Rare Books, New Jersey Government Publications, Maps & Atlases, Jerseyana, Magazines & Newspapers, and the General Book Collection.

Take a trip through history at the library, and see if you can answer the question, Patriot or Spy?
